We Only TAKE5!
Take the Pledge!
The City of Fort Lauderdale is working to improve the curbside recycling program by eliminating contamination throughout the City. In the future, uniformed City of Fort Lauderdale staff and Green Your Routine volunteers will be in your neighborhood conducting a recycling cart audit.

Contamination occurs when garbage and non-recyclable materials are placed in recycling carts with good recycling materials.
We Only TAKE5:
Paper
Metal Cans
Cardboard
Plastic Bottles and Containers
Glass Containers
These items should never be placed into recycling carts:
Top 5 on TAKE5!
- It’s good for the environment! Only TAKE5 to:
- Reduce the amount of waste sent to the incinerator for disposal
- Conserve natural resources
- Prevent pollution by reducing the need for new raw materials
- Save energy
- Keep solid waste costs as low as possible
- It’s super easy! Before you take your recycle cart to the curb perform a quick self-audit to make sure only TAKE5 items are placed in the cart.
- End “wish-cycling.” This occurs when a non-recyclable item is placed in the recycling bin with the hope it will be recycled. It is a common mistake but one that can be solved. When in doubt- throw it out!
- No plastic bags! Do not bag your recyclables. Keep them loose, clean and dry. Plastic bags can jam and damage processing equipment creating significant delays.
- Eliminating contamination helps the City to keep collection costs as low as possible. The processing facility has to remove contamination from the loads and this is long and costly process.
