Garden pots and containers are not recyclable in the City of Fort Lauderdale, regardless of whether they are made of plastic or terracotta. This includes all flower pots, seedling trays, tree buckets, hanging baskets and similar containers.

Plastic Flower Pots

Metal containers may be recyclable.  Please look for the triple-arrow mobius recycling symbol on the container bottom.

Your best option for disposing of containers is to return them to the nursery from which you purchased the plants. Large home improvement stores have special collection containers for the pots, and most nurseries will accept the returns. Be courteous: empty all soil and plants from the containers, and organize them by size before returning them. Pots returned through these programs are generally sorted and re-used when they are in good condition. Those that cannot be re-used are crushed, bundled and sent to a central recycling facility specially equipped to handle these types of plastics.

Don't want to make that trip back to the nursery?  The good news is that there are lots of ways to put these pots to good use.
