The death of a pet is traumatic, and even the death of a wild animal is very upsetting.  The City of Fort Lauderdale works with you to make removing a deceased animal a safe and dignified process.

Removal of Animals from Public Roadways

Broward County has announced that from October 1, 2013 it will no longer provide the service of removing deceased animals from roadways. Instead, residents who want to report a deceased animal on a public roadway should contact the City of Fort Lauderdale by calling the 24-Hour Customer Service Center at (954) 828-8000 or completing an online Customer Service Form.

Burial of Household Pets

Please follow these guidelines:

  1. Burial of animals on private property is discouraged. Proper burial requires preparation of the animal as well as deep digging to avoid drawing other animals to the site.  Improper burial can result in contamination of ground water, can draw vermin and insects and can disrupt underground pipes and electric lines. Please consider alternatives.
  2. If possible, consult your veterinarian to learn about alternatives for burial at a designated cemetery or for cremation.
  3. No animal should ever be placed in public waterways.  This is considered illegal dumping, is a violation of our Code of Ordinances and can endanger marine wildlife.
