Each household is provided with separate carts for yard waste, garbage, and recycling.  Shown here they are from left, the blue 65-gallon recycling cart, the black 65-gallon garbage cart, and the green 95-gallon yard waste cart.

Solid Waste Carts: Blue Recycling, Black Garbage, and Green Yard Waste

You must place the carts with the lids completely closed on a level, solid surface near the edge of the street. Make sure the handles are facing your home and that each cart is two feet away from:

  • Other solid waste carts
  • Mailboxes and fences
  • Tree trunks
  • Telephone/utility poles
  • Parked cars
  • Storm drains
  • Overhead obstructions, such as tree branches and power lines
  • Bulk trash

Please also ensure that carts do not block the public right-of-way, nor prevent visibility of oncoming traffic..

Remember, trash is picked up twice per week, while recycling and yard waste are picked up only once. Only place carts curbside on collection days.  Carts should be at the curb by 7 a.m. on your service day, but no earlier than 6 p.m. the night before collection is scheduled. Carts must be removed from the roadside after service and secured on your property that same day.

Some exceptions to these placement guidelines may apply if you live in a townhome community or on a street with limited access.  Please check with your homeowner's association or City of Fort Lauderdale Customer Service for additional guidance.
