Fertilizers, herbicides (weed killers) and pesticides come in two categories: those that are available via retail for use on private property, and those that are available to professional landscapers and exterminators. This page focuses on information for the individual property owner, manager or renter. Professional landscapers and exterminators are required to follow all local, State and Federal disposal guidelines applicable to their professions.

Please follow these guidelines for use and disposal of fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides in the home environment

  • Reduce waste by buying and applying only the recommended amount of each product.  Check with your local nursery or home improvement store for advice on how much to purchase.
  • Carefully follow manufacturer's directions for use and storage.
  • Keep all products in their original containers with original labeling.
  • Apply insecticides, herbicides, and fertilizer to grassy or landscaped areas only. Driveways and sidewalks should be avoided.
  • Clean up excess amounts of insecticides, herbicides, and fertilizer and never hose them into storm drains.
  • Avoid applying insecticides, herbicides, and fertilizer near waterways or if rain is expected. Always store insecticides, herbicides, and fertilizer in a dry area free from rainfall.

To dispose of unused, leftover or unwanted pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers, bring them to our Hazardous Waste Drop-off events.
