We use flammable items in our daily lives for everything from cooking to celebrations. Flammables can include, for example, tiki torch oil, safety flares and fireworks. Never dispose of these items in your garbage, recycling or yard waste containers, nor any dumpster or public space container.

Propane, lighter fluid and other flammables are considered to be household hazardous waste. Their containers are also considered hazardous and cannot be recycled, We urge our neighbors to follow all manufacturer instructions for storage and use. Please follows these guidelines for disposal:

  • Propane: Return propane tanks, empty or filled, to a propane provider, or bring to a City of Fort Lauderdale Household Hazardous Waste drop-off event.
  • Lighter Fluid and other flammables:Bring to a City of Fort Lauderdale Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off Event.
  • Please consult with Fort Lauderdale Police Department regarding safe disposal of firearms and ammunition.

Candles are an exception. Most wax based candles are perfectly safe to dispose of in the garbage. However, we encourage you to donate unused candles to charity or for re-use by artists. If your candle is stuck in a glass or metal container, put it in the freezer for a few hours. When you take it out, the wax should easily separate. Don't forget to recycle the container!

DO NOT pour any liquid flammable into drains, storm drains or waterways, and never onto grassy or other areas or paved surfaces. Flammable liquids can ignite even on water. They are dangerous to humans, to animals and to plant life. They can also emit toxic gasses into the air. Please dispose of all flammables according to the guidelines above.
