Oversized Items
Oversized items present a special waste problem. When large items are no longer useful, it is often difficult to store them until they can be properly disposed. However, with a little planning and sometimes just a single phone call, your oversized "junk" can find new life and do a whole lot of good in our community.
The City of Fort Lauderdale is home to several organizations which take donations of large, gently used items such as appliances, furniture, carpet, mattresses, large toys, cabinetry, fans and lighting, and even architectural details. The Habitat for Humanity of Broward Re-store, The Salvation Army Broward County, and Goodwill Industries of South Florida, along with numerous faith-based and other organizations, provide both pick-up and drop services for large items that are in usable condition or simply need minor repair. This includes large electronics (such as televisions), which can also be taken to ARC Broward Electronics Recycling Services. When donating items, please inquire about the agency's 501(c)(3) registration, and ask for a receipt. This allows you to get the full benefit of your donation, via a tax deduction, and helps to ensure that you are dealing with an organization which handles waste properly and works to benefit our community.
The City of Fort Lauderdale asks you to separate carefully those items which are truly waste from those that are simply no longer useful to your household. What's the difference? Waste includes items that do not work, are broken beyond repair, and are so outdated as to present a safety hazard. These should be disposed of through our Bulk Trash Pickup Program. All others can be donated. It is often surprising what charitable organizations will accept, so please consult them before throwing away an item that may be useful. Many of these organizations use broken items for training purposes.
City of Fort Lauderdale Bulk Trash Pick-up Program
The Bulk Trash Pickup Program features bulk trash collection of large household items and tree trimmings, up to 10 cubic yards in size, for residential customers. For more information about your service schedule and the program, please click on the buttons on the right. The City also provides special pickups by appointment, for a fee, for items exceeding the 10 cubic yard limit and for additional service beyond routine collection days.
Oversized Yard Waste
Your green Yard Waste cart should be used for all tree trimmings and other plant material. We understand that sometimes the amount of greenery to dispose will exceed the capacity of your cart, such as when you do pre-hurricane season pruning. You may set out extra greenery as part of bulk trash. However, because the City now recycles 100% of all yard waste, please take the time to separate yard waste from other bulk trash at the curb. This helps us to ensure that we can send the yard waste for mulching, keeps our route drivers on schedule, and keep disposal costs down.
