How you dispose of batteries can vary based upon the type of battery in question.  Most commonly used household batteries can be dropped at one of the City of Fort Lauderdale's Household Hazardouse Waste (HHW) Drop-off Events. In addition to our events, alternative drop sites may be available for specialized batteries.  Please note that there may be a slight fee for drop-off at any of the following sites.

  • Automotive, lawnmower, ATV and similar batteries usually can be returned to auto-parts stores.
  • Wheelchair and other medical equipment batteries may be accepted by medical supply vendors.
  • Cell phone batteries can be returned to major provider retail outlets. Look for specially marked kiosks.

Batteries for Recycling LABEL

One of the easiest things to do is to set up a battery "staging" area in your home or business.  Find a small container or bag.  Download our Batteries for Recycling LABEL shown on the right, and afix it to your container.  Set the container next to your supply of fresh batteries.  Each time you reach for a new battery, drop the old one in your specially marked recycling container.  When it's full, bring it to empty at the next City of Fort Lauderdale HHW Drop-off Event.
